Actress, Author Mariel Hemingway & Travelers Advantage share:
NORWALK, Conn., Oct. 30, 2007 - If you had the whole world to roam, where would you go? For actress and author Mariel Hemingway, the favorites were easy to identify.
"Travel has been such an important part of my life," Hemingway says. "There are some places that are so wonderful they just stand out."
Leslie Downey, director of Travelers Advantage and TravelersAdvantage.com, said, "A favorite destination doesn't have to be far away and it doesn't have to be a big city. People have different tastes and interests, and love to be able to explore travel options - whether it's a nearby long weekend or a trek across the world."
Hemingway lists her five favorites and explains what makes each special:
Lucca, Italy
"Lucca is a walled town that allows no cars and has a soul so rich with culture you feel Italian when you're there. There are fantastic little trattorias; it doesn't matter which one you choose - they're all good and have delicious fresh Italian food. You're always looking at something interesting even if you're on a little tiny street that feels like an alley. Although it's in the popular Tuscany region, Lucca is not the most well known of Italian destinations, so it is filled with locals bustling about."
Old Town in New Dehli, India
"This is one of the most interesting small areas I have ever seen. Inside the hustle and bustle of a modern Indian city, New Delhi, there lies an ancient `town within a town' that has the tiniest streets you've ever been on. Yet there are men with rickshaws carrying gloriously gold-laden Indian women through the streets at a speed that defies science. In every nook and cranny, there is something to admire. There are rug stores, furniture shops, tobacco stores, tourist T-shirt shops. This is a wondrous place."
Sydney
"I love Sydney! The people are irreverent and the culture is wildly interesting. It's a cross between being in London and the beach in Venice, Calif., with a little New York sophistication thrown in. Outdoor cafes overlooking Bondi Beach treat you to the most amazing fresh salads and seafood you can imagine. The people have a rough quality, but so much style and they absolutely love to laugh. You just want to adopt the accent and move right in. Do not miss Sydney. It will make you smile just to be there".
London
"London is style and grace personified. I love that the residents make time for tea every afternoon. And if you're working on a film set, they stop for tea midmorning as well. They love their rituals, and I (being a ritual addict) love that too. I adore wandering through Hyde Park & Green park and it is so lush that you simply shake your head. Then wander up into Chelsea and all the way downtown across the bridge and you're headed to the Tate Modern museum, an unbelievable piece of architecture. I love eating in London as well - the Soho House, the Ivy and tea at the Dorchester. I love to stay at the Baglioni on Kensington High Street. If you want to experience pure old school London, stay at Claridge's."
Ketchum, Idaho
"People in Ketchum (where I grew up) are wonderful and love their community. They are passionate about the hills, the back roads and the ski trails. They love everything the valley has to offer and are pioneers in becoming green at all levels. We understand the importance of caring for the earth. Because we love to wander our town, the city council has put in glorious walking and bike paths that enable you to experience the valley intimately. People there are so happy, with smiling faces and hellos for everyone. That's just the way we are."
